In 2016 I heard about the #LOWREZJAM on itch.io, a 18 days long game jam (1st april to 18th april) focused in the one single restriction: make a game on a 64x64 screen resolution! As a lover of the pixelart and retrogames, I wanted to join to this jam with the idea to develop a little sci-fy 2D platform.
But because I had a busy april month that year, I can’t dedicated much time to the project, sum to this that I didn’t have much experience with Unity back then (was the best option for a quick development instead of use MonoGame as alternative) and the extra complications with Unity these days with all relative about 2D native support (I used 2D Toolkit plugin to cover this area) I only developed a minimal set of features like the pixel-perfect camera system, emulating the room by room view of old games like Prince of Persia, the basic movements of the player, and a simple test level with a few of rooms.
To create the sprites I decided to try Aseprite, and the experience was outstanding! (in comparison with MS Paint, the editor I used during years to create pixelart 😛). I reach to design the player character with his animations, the main enemy character, similar to the player, and few more characters as enemies, NPC corpses or a “feedback” animated mark.
